So sorry to see you go so young Tommy. I see you had children, so I would like to leave one story here for them.
I lived on 4th and Central over the stores from 68 to 73. In 72 or 73, Tommy and I were very skinny kids that wanted to learn how to fight. I had been going to the YMCA for swimming lessons and noticed a flyer about karate classes being offered twice a week for $16.00 a month. We talked his dad and my mom to take turns driving us back and forth.
Little did we know that the headmaster of the World Tae Kwon Do Association from Korea was the instructor! I am sure his family knows a lot about Mr. Duk Sung Son.
We went to every class for years and it changed the way we looked at the world from a place of being a target for the bullies to a place of self-confidence and avoidance by the bullies. We moved to Park Street in 73 and then to Hackensack in 75 so my time around Tommy was only at the classes. I am a year older, so my high school days were over before his and I moved into my own apartment in December 1975. Being an adult placed karate classes on the back burner for me and I heard that Tommy kept going for a long time. I wish I could have spoken to him about how things changed and if I am not mistaken he went to another school to learn another style and started from the beginning all over again?
Anyway, I have many fond memories of those days. His mother and father were always kind to me. I see that his Dad has passed; he would have stories to tell about me as I almost got Tommy and I killed in a car crash, but that is another story.
I am attaching a photo of an event we both participated in and a photo of how he and your family would remember me. Your Dad took photos at the tournaments. I imagine they are in an old photo album somewhere.
I hope you passed peacefully Tommy. My sincerest condolences to your family.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
II Timothy 4:7-8 NKJV
You fought the good fight, Tom. We’re privileged to have known you and happy to have called you a friend and brother in Christ. Until we meet again in glory.
